Wiggle Enduro 6

As 10 am approached and with eyes firmly fixed on the dull overcast sky, competitors started to position both their bikes and themselves. The race is started ‘Le Mans’ style, which means hundreds of riders, bobbing around a short circuit most on cycling shoes as they sprinted for their bikes… if only they remembered where they left them. The starts are always a great spectacle as hundreds of competitors lurch forward in a huge swarm surging round the short circuit on the hunt for their parked bikes, all vying for position to start the race proper.

Not for the first time the RAF flew in perfect formation and their man on the front line was first to pick up his bike and was off to complete the first of many laps, with everyone else in chase mode.

First man back however and setting the theme for the race was Colnago-Ergon rider Gareth Montgomerie, riding in partnership with team mate Amy Hunt.

Nick Craig - Elite Men’s Solo winner:

“It’s nice to be back out there having a go, up till now it’s been same old same old, busy with work, plus I’ve just got over a running accident which damaged my knee, which up till recently has been hurting on the bike too.

So it’s nice to be able to get in the mix. Robin (Seymour) been going great and has just been selected for the Olympics which is brilliant for a 37year old, so I knew we’d be up for some ding dongs out there, but I reckon he’s been peaking too early to get his selection and he’s probably tapering down now ready for the Olympics.

I love this event, I look forward to it every year, I thought I might be a bit tired having just come back from holiday but it went alright.

There was a good little group of us out there to begin with and Gareth, riding pairs made it interesting when he came past, he made us go faster, in fact we did a 24min lap at one point, which doesn’t half hurt in the middle of 6 hours.

So a good start for me, I’ll be up at the Whyte Enduro for Drumlanrig and Grizedale and of course the Marathon Champs will be a target for me, so yeah it’s all good.”
